Myopia Control Could Help Preserve Your Vision

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is one of the most common and easily-corrected vision problems found in the developed world. Myopia is also becoming more common than ever before, with American children developing myopia at nearly twice the rate they were 50 years ago. Currently, almost 30% of all Americans have myopic eyes.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a common refractive error that affects distance vision and occurs when the eyeball is too long, or the front surface of the eyeball is too steep. This means that light entering your eye ends up focusing in front of your retina instead of on it, leading to blurry distance vision that must be corrected with either prescription glasses or contact lenses.

How Can Myopia Be Controlled?

Myopia generally worsens over time, with the most rapid prescription changes occurring during childhood. To keep your prescription low, myopia can be controlled using a variety of methods including medicated eye drops and specialized contact lenses, both of which are available at Ashburn Eyecare Associates.

Atropine eye drops are one commonly used method of myopia control. The drops work by temporarily paralyzing the eyes’ focusing muscles, causing the pupils to dilate. This temporary paralysis allows the eye muscles to rest, which some studies have found can be particularly effective for controlling myopia in children, at least during the first year of treatment.

Ortho-K (or orthokeratology) contact lenses are specialized contact lenses designed to control myopia. Ortho-K lenses are a type of rigid, gas-permeable lens that is designed to gently reshape your corneas while you sleep, providing you with clear vision the next day without the need for contact lenses or glasses.

However, the clear vision provided by Ortho-K lenses is only temporary, so you will need to wear them every night to enjoy continuous clear vision. The prolonged use of Ortho-K lenses can slow the progression of myopia.

These revolutionary new contact lenses are designed for patients who have both myopia and presbyopia, allowing you to experience clear vision at all distances while reducing eye strain caused by focusing on close up objects.

These and other types of multifocal contact lenses can also help slow the progression of myopia in children.

Just like multifocal contact lenses, multifocal glasses are designed to give clear vision to patients who have both myopia and presbyopia. The upper portion of the lens allows you to clearly see objects far away, while the lower portion provides you with clear close vision. Multifocal glasses can also reduce near strain, and can control myopia in children.

Executive top bifocals are a type of glasses lenses that have been shown to reduce myopia progression in children. Like traditional bifocal lenses, the lens contains 2 prescriptions. The top portion corrects distance vision while the bottom portion is used for near vision. The dual prescriptions help reduce eye strain during near vision tasks, which helps to reduce myopia progression.

If either you or your child has myopic eyes, myopia control may be a good option to consider. Speak to your optometrist during your next visit for more information.
