If you feel that glasses and contacts are less-than-ideal for your lifestyle, you may want to consider laser eye surgery. Laser eye surgery, including LASIK and PRK, can provide you with clear, crisp vision and let you say goodbye to glasses and contact lenses.
However, like any elective surgery, the choice to undergo laser eye surgery is a big decision to make. To ensure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision, Ashburn Eyecare Associates offers laser eye surgery consultations.

LASIK is the most common type of laser eye surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a small flap in the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium), which is then gently folded out of the way to reveal the cornea’s inner layers. Then, the surgeon uses a small laser to gently reshape these inner layers, correcting the patient’s vision before gently repositioning the outer flap.
PRK is very similar to LASIK, but instead of creating a flap in the epithelium the outer layers are removed entirely. Once the surgery is complete, the epithelial cells regrow over the course of a few days.
Since the epithelium needs to regrow its cells instead of simply heal, PRK has a longer recovery time. However, PRK can still be a good choice for some patients, particularly those whose corneas are too thin for LASIK. Also, since no flap is created during the procedure, PRK carries no risk of flap-related complications.
There are a variety of factors that need to be considered to determine if laser eye surgery is a good choice for your eyes. During your consultation, our optometrists will perform a series of tests that look at a variety of factors, including your current prescription, corneal thickness, and pupil size.
If our optometrists determine that laser eye surgery is a good option for you, they will then go over the benefits of the procedure with you as well as discuss any potential risks or complications. The optometrist will also walk you through the procedure, let you know what sort of results you can expect, and address any questions or concerns you have.
If you decide that laser eye surgery is right for you, your optometrist will then schedule a series of follow up appointments with you, work with your surgeon to ensure everything goes smoothly, and handle your pre and post-operative care.
Once your surgery is over, we will schedule follow up appointments with you. It is critical that you attend these appointments as they allow our optometrists to monitor your recovery closely and address any new questions or concerns you may have about your eyes, the procedure, or the healing process.

I have been trusting this practice with my eye care for nearly 20 years. Dr. Joedicke is the best.
Dr. Slavin is the best. Very thorough. Everyone is very efficient and conscientious of time.
My wife, son and I all have our eyes examined by Dr. Allen and couldn’t be happier. We have used other doctors in the past and since switching several years ago have been very pleased with the entire staff. Friendly and caring. Great selection of frames.
