Your Vision is Priceless; Don’t Put it at Risk

The human eye is incredibly delicate, so even a seemingly minor scratch or bump could put both your vision and eye health at risk.

If you or someone you know is currently experiencing an eye emergency, please contact Ashburn Eyecare Associates at either our Chantilly location at (703) 830-6380 or our Ashburn location at (703) 726-0005.

If our office is closed, please proceed to the nearest emergency room.

Seek Immediate Medical Attention

You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Eye pain
  • Swelling in or around your eye
  • Sudden onset of flashes or floaters
  • A scratch on your eye’s surface (corneal abrasion)
  • Something stuck in your eye (foreign object)
  • Significant ocular discharge

If you get any harmful chemicals either in or around your eye (chemical contact), you should flush your eye and then seek immediate medical attention.

Common Eye Emergencies & Their First Aid Strategies

Some eye emergencies happen more often than others. If you, or someone you know, is currently experiencing one of the following eye emergencies, please follow the suggested first aid strategies and then either contact our office or go to the nearest emergency room.

Harmful chemicals in or around your eye could put your vision at risk. To prevent damage, make sure to flush your eyes for at least 15 minutes using cool, clear water.

You need to flush your eye for the entire 15 minutes, even if it begins to feel better before the full 15 minutes has passed. By flushing your eye thoroughly, you can ensure that any residual chemicals are diluted and washed away. When you have finished flushing your eye, seek immediate medical attention.

The cornea is the thin, transparent membrane that covers your iris and pupil. The cornea is extremely delicate, so even a slight bump or a small scratch can cause serious damage.

Corneal abrasions are extremely painful and can leave your eye vulnerable to infection. If you experience a corneal abrasion, you need to avoid rubbing your eye. Rubbing can move debris around, causing more extensive damage.

If you suspect that there is some debris in your eye, you may be able to remove it by flushing your eye gently with cool, clean water. Whether or not you’re able to remove the debris by flushing your eye, you still need to have your eye examined by a professional.

If you have something trapped between your eye and eyelid, you may be able to dislodge it by flushing your eye with cool, clean water. Even if you can remove the object on your own, it is still critical that you have your eye examined by a professional.

However, if there is something embedded in your eye, you mustn’t rub your eye or attempt to remove the object on your own. Leave the object alone and have your eye examined by a professional right away.
