What Causes Dry Eyes?

There are two root causes of dry eyes: poor tear quality and inadequate tear volume. Since our eyes rely on tears for lubrication a lack of tears, or poor quality tears, can lead to dry eyes.

Our tears are made up of three main ingredients: water, oil (called meibum), and mucin. The meibum is responsible for creating a thin, protective film over the surface of each tear, which slows the evaporation process. Mucin acts as a lubricant and allows our tears to spread out evenly over the surface of the eye. When our tears evaporate too quickly or aren’t evenly distributed across the eye’s surface, it can cause our eyes to become dry and irritated.

Our eyes produce tears using several different glands, which are located in and around our eyelids. Tear production can be disrupted or hindered by many different factors, including select medical conditions, certain medications, and age.

Environmental factors, including a dry environment or strong winds, can also cause our tears to evaporate too quickly, leading to dry eye.

Depending on the root cause of your dry eye, your optometrist may suggest treating them with nutritional supplements. Research has found that a healthy diet plays a role in overall eye health. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids (which are found in fish, nuts, and leafy greens) can both increase meibum production and reduce eye inflammation, providing relief from some forms of dry eye.

A comprehensive nutritional study that looked at the relationship between eye health and nutrition found that the consumption of vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc are all important for good eye health.
